How Does Ozone Water Treatment Work?

Ozone water treatment offers an effective alternative to traditional chlorination methods. While chlorination has long been a conventional process for water purification, ozone treatments are gaining traction. Both ozone and chlorine boast robust disinfectant properties, yet they differ significantly in efficacy, chemical residue, and overall effectiveness.

The genesis of ozone lies in oxygen. While an oxygen molecule consists of two atoms (O2), ozone has an extra atom, making it O3. 

 

Ozone Creation Process:
  • When subjected to electricity or ultraviolet light, oxygen molecules split, producing single oxygen atoms. These solo atoms then bond with O2, yielding O3. This phenomenon mirrors the natural production of the protective ozone layer in our atmosphere, created by sunlight. Similarly, lightning produces ozone at ground level by electrifying oxygen-rich air. Such natural occurrences are emulated in UV and electrical ozone generators, predominant tools in water treatment. Although other methods of ozone production exist, UV and electrical techniques remain preferred due to their efficiency and reliability. 

Ozone vs. Chlorination:

  • Comparing the two, ozone water treatment systems disinfect water roughly three times faster than chlorination. They demand a shorter water contact duration for effective disinfection, with the action predominantly happening at the ozone-water interaction point.   • Employing corona discharge, electrical ozone generators simulate the natural formation of ozone during thunderstorms. Rather than relying on lightning, these devices use high-voltage discharges across oxygen within chambers made of glass, ceramic, or steel. This process facilitates the transformation of molecular oxygen into atomic oxygen, setting the stage for ozone generation. Once formed, this ozone is introduced into water directly or through a venturi tube, kick-starting the oxidation process.

Ultraviolet Light Ozone Generators:

  • UV lights emitting wavelengths between 160-240 nm can instigate ozone formation. This UV radiation disrupts oxygen molecules, breaking them into individual atoms. These atoms then bond with existing oxygen molecules to form ozone. Within UV ozone systems, oxygen flows between a UV lamp and a quartz sleeve, resulting in ozone production. This generated ozone is subsequently channeled into water using a venturi system. However, a notable distinction exists: UV generators produce ozone at concentrations lower than their electrical counterparts, making the latter more potent.
